The "First Cut" in Mold Manufacturing
Milling is the most fundamental and essential machining process in mold manufacturing. Simply put, it uses a high-speed rotating milling cutter to cut away material from a steel blank, gradually shaping it into the required form and dimensions of a mold component.
If mold manufacturing is like sculpting, milling is the process that "removes the excess." It is the essential pathway that transforms a block of steel into a precision component.
Core Principle: Rotating Cutter + Moving Workpiece
Unlike traditional turning, milling is characterized by a rotating cutter performing the cutting action while the workpiece moves in a feeding motion. The milling cutter, equipped with multiple cutting edges, spins at high speed like a rotary file, removing layers of metal.
This operational principle makes milling highly versatile, capable of machining flat surfaces, stepped surfaces, grooves, curved surfaces, gear teeth, and other complex features.
Three Stages: From "Heavy Stock Removal" to "Fine Detailing"
The milling of a mold component typically follows three steps:
Rough Machining (Stock Removal)
The sole objective is speed. Using large cutters, deep cuts, and heavy feeds, the goal is to remove 80%–90% of the excess material from the blank in the shortest possible time, leaving a rough shape close to the final form. This stage prioritizes material removal rate; surface finish is not a concern.
Semi-Finish Machining
Using smaller cutters and lighter cuts, this stage smooths the workpiece surface and cleans out corners that roughing couldn't reach, preparing a uniform stock layer for finishing.
Finish Machining
The sole objective is precision. Using precise tools, minimal cuts, and dense tool paths, this final stage achieves the dimensional accuracy and surface finish specified on the drawing. This is the step that truly determines mold quality.
