Die Casting

⭐A Multi-Pronged Approach to Solving Porosity and Shrinkage Defects in Die Casting

In die casting production, porosity and shrinkage are two persistent quality issues that not only compromise component strength but also often lead to leakage failures, causing significant challenges for die casting manufacturers. Effectively addressing these defects is a critical task in both mold design and process optimization.

Drawing on years of practical experience, the technical team at Haina Molds has developed a systematic solution strategy based on a thorough understanding of defect mechanisms, summarized as "simultaneous exhaust and feeding."

For porosity, the core strategy is "exhaust." In the mold design phase, Haina Molds optimizes the gating and venting systems by strategically placing venting slots and overflow wells to ensure smooth evacuation of trapped air. For high-quality demanding products, we apply vacuum die casting to minimize gas entrapment from the source, significantly improving casting integrity. Additionally, precise control of injection speed and release agent application further reduces the risk of porosity.

For shrinkage, the key is "feeding." Shrinkage defects typically occur in the thick sections of a casting. Haina Molds effectively utilizes local squeeze pin technology, positioning squeeze pins at corresponding mold locations to apply pressure during solidification, thereby feeding the thick areas. This solution has reduced the leakage rejection rate of an aluminum alloy housing to below 1% in a specific case. We also achieve effective feeding through enhanced local cooling and optimized gating system design.

"Porosity and shrinkage often coexist, and a single measure is rarely sufficient to completely eliminate them," noted the technical director at Haina Molds. "We treat mold design, process parameters, and post-processing as an integrated system. By combining various methods such as vacuum assistance, local squeeze, and cooling optimization according to the specific part characteristics, we offer our customers a comprehensive solution to improve casting quality and reduce scrap rates."
