Die Casting
From smartphone metal frames to aluminum alloy doors and windows, many metal products undergo a key surface treatment process—anodizing. It "grows" a dense oxide film on the metal surface, making ordinary aluminum wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and colorfully vibrant.
Core Principle
Anodizing is an electrochemical reaction. By placing an aluminum part as the "anode" in an acidic electrolyte and applying an electric current, a dense aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) film forms on the surface. This film bonds firmly to the metal substrate and does not easily peel off.
Standard Process
·Pre-treatment: Degreasing and alkaline etching to remove the natural oxide layer, exposing the pure substrate.
·Anodizing: Applying current to grow a porous oxide film (the film has a honeycomb-like microporous structure).
·Coloring: Utilizing the micropores to absorb dyes, imparting various colors.
·Sealing: Closing the micropores to form a dense, stain-resistant protective layer.
Four Major Advantages
·Wear and Corrosion Resistance: The oxide film is highly hard, isolating air and moisture.
·Aesthetics: The porous structure easily absorbs dyes, offering a delicate and premium metallic texture.
·Insulation: Aluminum oxide itself is insulating, making it suitable for electronic housings.
·Eco-friendly: Compared to electroplating, it produces less heavy metal pollution, and the film is non-toxic.
Common Applications
·Consumer Electronics: Smartphone frames, laptop casings (coloring + brushed texture).
·Automotive & Aerospace: Wheels, pistons (hard anodizing enhances wear resistance).
·Construction & Home: Aluminum alloy doors, windows, curtain walls (corrosion-free for decades).
·Industrial Parts: Insulating housings, corrosion-resistant structural components.
Simply put: Anodizing uses electricity to "grow" a ceramic-like protective layer on aluminum that is far thicker, harder, and dyeable compared to the natural oxide film. Next time you pick up a phone with a metallic feel, take a moment to appreciate this "invisible armor."
