What Exactly Can a CMM Measure?

Simply put, CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) measurement is the ultra-precise measurement of an object's geometric dimensions, form, and position tolerances within three-dimensional space. It can measure not only "points," but also fit precise point data into various features such as lines, planes, and cylinders.

In daily production and quality control, it excels mainly in the following areas:

Complex Surface Scanning and Comparison: This is the most critical application in the mold industry. No matter how complex the mold cavity is, the CMM can obtain point cloud data through continuous scanning and directly perform a "color map comparison" with the 3D CAD model, intuitively showing engineers where too much material was cut and where too little was cut.

Precise Verification of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T): Straightness, flatness, perpendicularity, coaxiality, position tolerance… these key indicators that determine mold fit precision can all be given authoritative reports by the CMM at micron-level (μm) accuracy.

Electrode and First Article Inspection: From the copper electrodes used in machining (checking spark gap allowance) to the first injection-molded part from trial molding (FAI first article inspection), the CMM serves as the last line of defense for ensuring dimensional compliance.
