Many customers don't understand: why does a mold quote take several days? Isn't it just sending the design drawing to the mold manufacturer and having them give a number?
The reality is far from that simple. Mold quoting is not "weighing and pricing"—it is a precise technical assessment. The quoting personnel need to analyze the product design, evaluate the parting line, determine draft angles, predict potential defects (shrinkage, gas trapping, deformation), calculate machining hours (CNC, EDM, wire cutting, polishing, assembly), estimate material costs (mold base, cavity/core steel, hot runner, standard components), and also consider the number of trial shots, modification risks, and delivery lead time. For a medium-complexity mold, the process analysis and machining time estimation alone can take half to a full day. If the design has ambiguities or conflicts, additional communication and confirmation with the customer are needed, which can take several more days. Therefore, a responsible and executable quote delivered within a few days is actually a sign of professionalism.
Common Traps in Mold Quoting
The number on a quote can sometimes be just an "entry price." The following traps deserve special attention:
ⅰ.Low-ball pricing: The quote is significantly below the market average to attract customers into signing. However, subsequent costs are added layer by layer through design changes, rush fees, trial shot fees, and modification fees, ultimately making the total cost far higher than the initial quote.
ⅱ.Substitution of inferior materials: The quote specifies imported mold steel (e.g., S136, P20), but domestic substitutes or recycled materials are used instead. The difference may not be noticeable in the short term, but mold life and corrosion resistance are greatly compromised.
ⅲ.Vague standard component specifications: Standard parts such as hot runners, ejector pins, springs, and guide pins vary widely in price depending on the brand. If the quote does not specify the brand, cheap components may be substituted, leading to frequent breakdowns later.
ⅳ.Reduced machining accuracy: A precision of 0.005mm is promised in the quote, but the actual delivered mold may only achieve 0.02mm. Without inspection reports or CMM data, customers have little ability to verify.
ⅴ.Limited trial shots: The quote includes only one trial shot, with each additional shot charged extra. Yet the vast majority of molds cannot achieve perfection in a single trial shot. This is a hidden "recurring fee" trap.
The Most Easily Overlooked Item: Design Change and Communication Costs
Among all the items that are often missed in quoting, design change costs are the most easily overlooked.
Many mold manufacturers assume, when quoting, that the customer's drawing is the "final version." But in reality, from the time of quoting to mold delivery, product designs often undergo multiple changes—internal customer reviews, assembly issues, or optimizations identified after trial shots. Each change means: re-evaluating the process, modifying the programming, reworking or scrapping already machined components, and rescheduling production. If these costs are not clearly defined at the quoting stage, they will ultimately be borne by the mold manufacturer or lead to disputes between both parties.
Even more subtle is communication cost. Unspecified details in the design drawing, conflicting dimensions, or unreasonable draft angles all require repeated clarification. A single miscommunication can lead to machining errors and the loss of several days of labor. These soft costs are rarely included in the quote, yet they represent a significant real expense.
Haina Company's One-Stop Service
Precisely because mold quoting is so complex and full of potential traps, Haina Company offers one-stop service covering product design, mold manufacturing, injection molding, and surface finishing. Customers only need to provide a product idea or preliminary design, and we can help optimize manufacturability, avoiding the back-and-forth hassle of design changes. From the very first quote, every step—material brand, machining accuracy, standard component configuration, number of trial shots—is transparent and free of hidden fees. We believe that a good quote is not just a number; it is a commitment to being responsible to our customers.
