In the landscape of China's mold industry, Guangdong holds an unshakable core position. In the mold sector, there is a well-known saying: "The world's molds look to China, and China's molds look to Chang'an." Here, "Chang'an" refers to Chang'an Town in Dongguan - a small town in the south of the country with an area of less than 80 square kilometers and a population of only around 800,000.

So, why can such a town stand at the top of China's mold industry? The answer lies in its scale, ecology and strength.

The strength of the mold industry hub

Chang'an Town has over 1,600 metal mold manufacturing enterprises, along with numerous individual business owners. The total number of related business entities is close to 10,000. These enterprises jointly form a mechanical and hardware mold industrial cluster worth 50 billion yuan. In 2024, Chang'an Town's GDP exceeded 100 billion yuan, becoming the first "thousand-billion town" in Dongguan and the third such town in the entire province.

Looking at the entire Guangdong region, the province contributes nearly 40% of the national mold output value. In Dongguan alone, there are over 20,000 mold-related business entities, among which about 6,000 are industrial enterprises. This means that for every 10 sets of molds produced in China, approximately 1 set comes from Dongguan. 

Half-hour Supply Chain Circle

The true strength of Chang'an's mold industry lies not in the large number of enterprises, but in the high concentration of the industrial chain. Here, a unique "half-hour industrial circle" has been formed - any mold enterprise can obtain all the necessary raw materials, components, and processing services within a 30-minute drive. From raw material supply, design and research and development, to production, manufacturing, and sales services, a complete closed loop has been established. Enterprises do not need to stockpile large amounts of inventory, nor do they need to purchase components over long distances. The supply chain response speed is far superior to that of other regions. 

For an industry like molds, which is highly customized and has tight delivery deadlines, this ecological advantage is almost impossible to replicate.

Not just "able to do", but "doing it well"

The mold manufacturing enterprises in Chang'an are not satisfied with merely "being able to produce". Instead, they strive for "doing it precisely and specializing in it". With the support of the National Mold Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Guangdong) - the only national mold quality inspection institution in South China - the processing accuracy of local enterprises has reached the micrometer level. The precision deviation of a qualified mold produced here is controlled within one seventh of the diameter of a hair. For this reason, Chang'an molds not only serve the domestic manufacturing industry but also are exported overseas in large quantities, becoming an indispensable part of the global supply chain. 

From "Manufacturing" to "Intelligent Manufacturing"

Today's Changan mold industry is no longer the "hammering and chiseling" as people usually imagine. The digital and intelligent transformation is underway in full swing. The numerical control rate of many enterprises has reached over 95%, and the proportion of R&D personnel continues to expand. In the field of new energy, more than 300 enterprises have expanded their business from traditional electronic information to new energy support, forming a complete battery pack production industrial chain. This means that Changan mold enterprises are shifting from "selling molds" to "selling solutions", and from "labor-intensive" to "technology-intensive".
