What Are Injection Molding Materials?
Plastics are a common class of materials whose primary component is polymer synthetic resin. They are plastic and fluid under specific temperatures and pressures, allowing them to be molded into particular shapes, and they can retain those shapes under certain conditions. Most plastics are suitable for injection molding, which is why injection molding materials are generally referred to as plastics that can be used in injection molding production. Product designers rely on material properties to ensure design feasibility and performance, while injection molding engineers need to precisely adjust process parameters based on the thermal behavior of materials to optimize production efficiency. Mold designers must design mold structures taking into account material flowability and shrinkage rates, and quality control personnel need to trace the root causes of issues through material defect analysis.

Injection molding materials are generally classified into the following five major categories based on scientific classification systems:
Commodity thermoplastics (PP, PE, PS) : offer economical solutions for high-volume applications, characterized by their lightweight nature, toughness, chemical resistance, and impact resistance, with typical applications including packaging, automotive components, and medical devices.
Engineering plastics (ABS, PC, Nylon, POM): provide enhanced mechanical and thermal properties, featuring high durability, impact resistance, heat resistance, and friction resistance, and are commonly used in precision gears, automotive parts, and electronic products.
High-performance polymers (PEEK, PPS, PEI): are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and chemical resistance, making them suitable for demanding applications in aerospace, automotive, and medical implants.
Thermosetting polymers (Epoxy, Silicone): undergo irreversible curing and offer excellent electrical insulation properties.
Modified compounds are custom-formulated blends with additives (such as glass-filled nylon) to achieve specific performance requirements.
